This role is a senior, highly specialised post focused on leading the pharmacy component of clinical trials at Wexham Park Hospital (WPH). The position centres on leading and managing the Pharmacy Clinical Trials service at WPH, acting as the bridge between the Trust’s R&I department and the pharmacy workforce.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee all pharmacy clinical trial activities at Wexham Park Hospital (WPH), ensuring compliance with national legislation and Good Clinical Practice.
  • Manage the CT workflow, including CTIMP and ATIMP studies.
  • Provide specialist advice on IMP handling, storage, dispensing, accountability, and recall processes.
  • Act as the main liaison with Frimley Health R&I Office and other research stakeholders in particular the Pharmacy CT team at Frimley Park Hospital (FPH).
  • Support and develop pharmacy staff, including line management of a CT technician.
  • Contribute to service development, including business planning, risk management, and quality assurance.
  • Act as the Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) pharmacy specialist within the department.

Main Duties of the Job

  • To support the pharmacy clinical trials service across the Trust in line with national and regulatory requirements.
  • To work closely with the R&I team to help deliver the strategic plan.
  • To approve, screen, dispense, and check clinical trial prescriptions when applicable.
  • To create, update, or review Standard Operating Procedures and trial‑related documents for the pharmacy clinical trials service.
  • To provide advice on the pharmaceutical aspects of clinical trials involving Investigational Medicinal Products (CTIMPs) and Advanced Therapy Investigational Medicinal Products (ATIMPs) ensuring that all legal and statutory requirements are met and activities performed in adherence with Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
  • To provide training and support to pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • To advise medical and nursing staff involved in clinical trials on Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and requirements relating to Investigational Medicinal Products (IMPs) management.
  • To use service databases and other systems to capture and report information relating to the pharmacy trials service.
  • To set up Pharmacy Site Files and ensure they are well maintained and inspection‑ready.

Qualifications

Essential criteria:



  • MPharm or equivalent academic qualification.
  • Registration with the GPhC.
  • Postgraduate clinical diploma/MSc equivalent or relevant experience.
  • Evidence of recent Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

Desirable criteria:



  • Current membership with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
  • Independent prescriber qualification.

Experience

Essential criteria:



  • Post‑qualification experience working as a pharmacist in a clinical environment.
  • Experience of clinical trials.

Desirable criteria:



  • Experience within both clinical and operational areas of pharmacy practice.
  • Experience of working in an aseptic unit in an unlicensed chemotherapy compounding unit.
  • Clinical audit experience.
  • Experience of the EDGE project management system.

Skills

Essential criteria:



  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to adapt and cope with challenges.
  • Applied clinical knowledge.
  • Knowledge of aseptic procedures.

Desirable criteria:



  • Excellent Information Technology skills.
  • Working knowledge of general haematology and oncology chemotherapy protocols.
  • Working knowledge of eprescribing software ARIA and Chemo‑care.
