Do you have proven experience in systems engineering for medical devices? If so, we want to hear from you!

Amber Therapeutics are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. This is a full-time hybrid role based at our new custom-built facility in Harwell, Oxfordshire. Amber is a pioneering neuromodulation company dedicated to transforming the lives of patients through advanced medical technology. We specialize in the development of cutting-edge active implantable medical devices.

The Role

Join Amber Therapeutics to help shape the future of deep brain stimulation (DBS) and pelvic health systems. You'll play a key role in developing and documenting our medical device systems – covering requirements management, risk analysis, testing, and support for academic-led clinical trials. Reporting to the Principal Systems and Risk Engineer, you'll ensure compliance with international standards while driving system integration across software, hardware, and firmware. Your primary focus will be on DBS systems, with the opportunity to contribute to wider projects as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define and document system architecture, design inputs and interfaces, maintaining traceability through V&V.
  • Drive risk management activities (FMEA, FTA), keeping files up to date in line with ISO 14971.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation (DHF), supporting audits and regulatory submissions.
  • Manage requirements across systems and sub-systems, ensuring traceability to risks and verification activities.
  • Support clinical trials and investigations, resolving device‑related issues and leading verification testing.
  • Collaborate across engineering, clinical, quality and regulatory teams to ensure integration and compliance.
  • Contribute to process improvements, staying current with evolving standards and regulations.

Skills & Experience
Essential:

  • Engineering or related bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in medical device development, particularly in a regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14971 and medical device design controls (e.g., ISO 13485, FDA QSR).
  • Working knowledge of system‑level requirements and documentation practices.
  • Understanding of verification and validation principles and traceability.

Desirable:

  • Experience with implantable or neurostimulation medical devices.
  • Exposure to standards such as IEC 60601, IEC 62304, or ISO 14708.
  • Experience with document control and requirements management tools.
  • Experience interacting with clinical and academic partners.

The successful candidate will be a detail‑oriented and versatile engineer with experience in regulated medical device development. With a strong grounding in systems engineering and the medical device development lifecycle, you will bring expertise in risk management practices & tools. With a track record in producing and maintaining technical documentation to regulatory standards (ISO 13485, FDA, MDR), you will be confident in planning, executing and reporting verification activities. To thrive in this role, you'll need excellent communication skills to work effectively across technical, clinical and regulatory teams, alongside the problem‑solving ability to tackle complex, multidisciplinary challenges.

Medical Technology Recruitment Trends 2025 (UK): What Job Seekers Need To Know About Today’s Hiring Process

Summary: UK medical technology hiring has shifted from title‑led CV screens to capability‑driven assessments that emphasise regulatory‑aware product delivery (QMS, ISO 13485), software lifecycle & risk (IEC 62304/14971), usability (IEC 62366), clinical & regulatory strategy (MDR/UKCA), device cyber security & privacy, and measurable patient/clinical and commercial impact. This guide explains what’s changed, what to expect in interviews & how to prepare—especially for SaMD engineers, AI/ML in medical devices, product & quality engineers, regulatory/clinical affairs specialists, validation/verification, manufacturing/operations, and digital health roles. Who this is for: Software/firmware engineers in medtech, SaMD/AI engineers, systems & verification engineers, quality & regulatory affairs (QARA), clinical evaluation/PMCF specialists, human factors engineers, medical device cyber security & privacy, test/validation, manufacturing & operations, field/service engineers, and medtech product managers in the UK.

Why Medical Technology Careers in the UK Are Becoming More Multidisciplinary

Medical technology (medtech) is transforming healthcare in the UK — from wearable sensors to AI diagnostic tools, from surgical robots to telemedicine platforms. Advances in hardware, software, data and connectivity are enabling more personalized, efficient and accessible care. But with great power comes great responsibility. As medical devices and health technologies enter hospitals, clinics and consumers’ homes, professionals in this domain must master much more than engineering and algorithms. They must also understand law, ethics, psychology, linguistics & design. That is, medtech careers are now deeply multidisciplinary. In this article, we explore why medical technology careers in the UK are becoming more multidisciplinary, how these five allied fields now intersect with medtech work, and what job-seekers and employers should do to succeed in this evolving ecosystem.

Medical Technology Team Structures Explained: Who Does What in a Modern MedTech Department

Medical technology (MedTech) spans everything from wearable health devices and surgical robots to diagnostic imaging, in-vitro diagnostics (IVD), digital therapeutics, AI-driven triage, and Class I–III medical devices. In the UK, the sector touches NHS care pathways, private providers, and global markets—with stringent expectations for safety, clinical evidence, cybersecurity, and data privacy. As ventures scale from prototype to regulated product, clear team structures become the difference between promising pilots and licensed, market-ready devices. Whether you’re hiring your first clinical specialist or applying for a role in QA/RA, this guide explains who does what in a modern MedTech department, how functions collaborate across the product lifecycle, UK-typical skill sets and salaries, common pitfalls, and best practices for building a resilient team.
