The Role

We have an opportunity for a Principal Fuel Cell Test Engineer to join a rapidly expanding team in Bristol.

The group focuses on battery safety and performance testing and failure analysis in a variety of industries, including automotive, aerospace, consumer electronics, medical devices, wearables, and other applications.

Preferred focus in electrical, electrochemical or mechanical engineering

Core Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, manage, and conduct on-site Fuel Cell testing of customer provided products based on provided standards or specifications. This includes understanding designs and schematics, validating project scope, equipment test setup and script writing, as well as delivering customer results

  • Provide technical and engineering leadership, supporting the development of new technologies and new test setups for custom fuel cell testing requests

  • Simultaneously support multiple projects, accountable for accurate and timely release of testing data to customers including signoffs of quality control data as acceptable

  • Oversee standard and/or routine technical problem-solving activities

  • Communicate project status and test results to customer, commercial team members, and management throughout testing, while providing on-going technical support to clients throughout the project

  • Provide input and support on business development opportunities with new or existing customers and internal investments. Including facility and equipment specifications.

  • Setup and operate standard testing equipment across sites, including fuel cell stack and system, test stand controllers such as temperature/humidity chambers, various test controllers, power supplies, etc.

  • Assist in the professional development, up-skilling and training of novice technicians and other engineers within the local laboratories

    Skills and Qualifications

  • Possess a Bachelors of Science or Engineering degree in a science, engineering or testing related field – preferred focus in electrical, electrochemical or mechanical engineering

  • Knowledge of safely testing with hydrogen, compressed gas, fuel cell stacks and systems is essential

  • Experience using various software, or similar programs for fuel cell testing is preferred

  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety, assessments and safety system implementation and quality management systems is essential

  • Must be self-motivated and adaptable, able to work independently in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment

  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written, organisation, time-management, and customer service skills

  • Demonstrated ability to apply academic knowledge within the context of fuel cell testing services

  • In-depth understanding of testing concepts; able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in diagrams or mathematical form, and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.

  • Good understand of fuel cell characterisation, performance and durability testing

  • Experience operating tests and collected data to define Balance of Plant specifications and control strategy definition

  • Knowledge of customer and application life cycle, oversight of operational safety from receipt, work and disposal

  • Ideally this person would have previously undertaken high-voltage and compressed gas training

  • Has experience with fuel cell stack and system design, testing processes, operating procedures and reporting.

  • Possess strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office
