Clinical Trials Specialist Pharmacist

University College London Hospitals undertakes world‑class research across many specialities including cancer, neurology, stroke, rheumatology, and early phase medicine. In this role you will be a key part of facilitating this research. You will lead a sub team of pharmacists to provide a high‑quality clinical trial service, thereby giving access to new, ground‑breaking treatments to patients via study protocols. The postholder will acquire experience of leadership, line management, finance, risk assessments, audit, and inspection. Applicants must be GPhC‑registered pharmacists with at least 3 years’ experience in an NHS hospital healthcare setting. Prior experience of clinical trials is desirable. Main duties of the job

The postholder is a member of the senior pharmacy research team and supports the Principal Pharmacist R&D to provide a high‑quality consistent service. They will lead on risk reviews for the UCLH Joint Research Office (known as 'Assess, Arrange and Confirm' or AAC) and work closely with senior technical staff to setup new trials. They will lead on collating and establishing trends in any dispensing errors/deviations on the Trusts' digital database (Datix), reviewing and implementing new or amended SOPs, and leading the process of audit from external regulators and sponsors. The postholder will provide senior support to clinical trial coordinators, nursing and clinic/day unit staff and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry to ensure the smooth running of all clinical trials requiring pharmaceutical services. The post holder will also line manage pharmacists who rotate through clinical trials.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications

  • Pharmacist Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Detailed knowledge of GCP and GMP/GDP, current legislation and regulations; and ability to apply this knowledge to develop and run a clinical trial service.
  • Working knowledge of quality aspects of GCP, GMP and GDP
  • Well‑developed IT skills and use of IT to manage and monitor quality systems.
  • Expert knowledge of pharmaceutical aspects of investigational medicines, aseptic production, and dispensary practice.
  • Specialist Qualification in Clinical Diploma in Pharmacy Practice or Pharmaceutical Technical Services, e.g. ClinDipP, PTQA MSc or equivalent experience and expertise

Experience

  • Demonstrable post registration work in hospital pharmacy practise.
  • Demonstrable experience of clinical trials, dispensary and aseptic manufacture (Chemotherapy, CIVAS and PN)
  • Experience in quality systems in a pharmaceutical setting.
  • Experience of writing SOPs, managing change and incidents, and developing and delivering action plans.
  • Awareness of current national standards, guidelines, and service delivery issues relevant to clinical trials.
  • Experience of clinical pharmacy.
  • Experience of GCP or GMP audits and demonstrable evidence of use of findings to improve practice.
  • Experience of managing change in a pharmaceutical setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to solve difficult and ambiguous problems by advanced reasoning, sound pharmaceutical judgement and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage incidents and deviations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of GCP, GMP and Quality management and a proven ability to apply this knowledge to maintain a service.

  • Able to communicate complex, contentious and sensitive information effectively when using clear written and spoken English.

Ensure the risk of infection to self, colleagues, patients, relatives, and visitors is minimised by:

  • Being familiar with, and adhering to Trust policies and guidance on infection prevention and control.
  • Taking personal responsibility so far as is reasonably practicable, in helping ensure that effective prevention and control of health care associated infections is embedded into everyday practice and applied consistently.
  • Completing all required training and education (both via e‑learning and face to face) on infection prevention and control.
  • Including infection prevention and control as an integral part of your continuous personal/professional development and included in your annual appraisal.
