Advanced Specialist Pharmacist, Clinical Trials

The Pharmacy Department provides a comprehensive pharmacy service across the Trust and to several external community units. It is a large, very busy department with over 180 staff including Pharmacists, Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Assistants, Science Manufacturing Technicians and Admin staff. There are many varied roles and we all work as a team to provide the different functions and services whilst maintaining a high level of patient care. We have strong links with both the School of Pharmacy (on-site teaching practitioner posts) and the Medical School at the nearby University of East Anglia. Electronic prescribing and medicines administration has been implemented across all inpatient wards, the Emergency Department and Outpatients.

Functions of the Pharmacy Department include the ordering, receipt, and supply of medicines to wards and departments throughout the Trust/external units. This includes dispensing for inpatients, outpatients, community units and supplying ward stocks averaging around 2,500 items a day. Wards and external units are provided with a clinical service with Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team. The Pharmacy provides Aseptic Services such as the preparation and supply of chemotherapy and other sterile products. We have a Quality Assurance team that works to ensure that our products are prepared and supplied to the highest quality standards.

To lead, manage, develop and deliver the pharmaceutical component for all research protocol and clinical trials undertaken within the Trust including the National Institute for Health Research portfolio in line with International Conference Harmonisation of Good Clinical Practice (ICH GCP) guidelines.

To implement and maintain systems to ensure compliance with clinical trial protocols, good clinical practice and the European Clinical Trials Directive.

To provide expert advice and information in relation to the pharmaceutical component of R&D activities including all clinical trials throughout the Trust to ensure compliance with national legislation and guidelines.

To be the pharmaceutical representative on the Trust’s Research Governance Committee in order to lead and advise on the pharmaceutical component of all research proposals.

To be responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive training and education on medicine issues within the Clinical Trials services to members of the pharmacy service and the wider MDT.

To be a pioneer for research and development within the Pharmacy department.

To actively report on clinical trial service delivery at departmental and research meetings.
