Assistant Ophthalmic Vision Science Practitioner – Medical Imaging

Job Overview
As an Assistant Ophthalmic Vision Science Practitioner, you will be trained to work within Ophthalmic Imaging, a specialised form of medical photography for diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. You will greet patients, manage patient flow, support qualified staff with routine imaging procedures, and contribute to high‑quality patient care. You may need to study towards a Level 2 healthcare apprenticeship. The programme offers a clear career pathway and the chance to explore other roles within the Trust.
Main Responsibilities
- Meet patients, manage patient flow and maintain a patient‑centred experience.
- Perform routine ophthalmic imaging procedures on medical devices.
- Support qualified staff in the assessment of health needs and deliver patient care, including clinical risk assessment.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team, assisting nursing and other clinical staff.
- Maintain and report equipment status and ensure clinical areas are prepared throughout the day.
- Respond to emergency situations, chaperone when required, and manage patient flow efficiently.
- Communicate information clearly to patients, carers and colleagues.
- Provide patient education and health‑promotion advice where appropriate.
Clinical Practice
- Assist with routine ophthalmic imaging and support new staff.
- Report equipment faults and follow up for repairs.
- Ensure handover between shifts using verbal or written methods.
- Support patients with special needs and provide clear instructions.
- Record and report changes in patient condition to senior staff.

Person Specification – Education and Qualifications
- GCSE or equivalent Maths and English Grade C or above.
- Willingness to complete a Level 2 healthcare apprenticeship (desirable).

- Experience in NHS or private healthcare and minimum one year in a customer service/face‑to‑front role (desirable).
